These Errors are killing your Brand!!!
Why this book?
I have a budget for books every month. I had already exhausted that budget for the month of June when I saw this book one evening on my way home from work. I could not help but buy it.
You could ask, “what’s so special about the book?”. The title caught my attention, to begin with. Building a personal brand online is something I have been looking into for a while now. Secondly, I know the power of stories, I know people like stories, I love stories. I still remember some of the movies I watched over a decade ago. So when I saw “BUILDING A STORY BRAND”, it caught my attention and I was curious to know what it says.
2 Deadly Errors
“Build a personal brand”, “Start a business”, these statements are everywhere these days. I see them everyday when I go on social media and I’m sure you do too. Maybe you’re thinking of starting one, or you already have it going, you need to watch out for these two mistakes. They suck the life out of your brand, milk your business dry until it’s as good as dead.
Error Number 1
Your brand does not offer anything that helps customers survive and thrive. The number one need of humans is to survive. Aside things that help people survive and thrive, any other thing is secondary. Your brand should therefore offer mainly, something that aligns with people’s need for survival. A few examples of these survival needs are;
Saving money - Who does not want to save money? You can check the growth of brands / businesses that offer low prices for people. It does not matter how rich someone is, they will still jump unto opportunities that help them save more money.
Building meaningful relationships - Man has a need to nurture and be nurtured. Meaningful relationship is important for people because they need someone to have their backs and share their happy and sad moments with. Offer this to people and they will thank you. Check how dating apps and shows are thriving.
Gaining higher status - My sister bought a phone priced insanely high and was happy because none of her friends had some and it caught their attention. No matter how people roast “status games” in public, it will never go away because people want to feel important. Hence the rise of Rolex, Louis Vuitton and other luxury brands.
Making more money - Who does not want more money? There is a saying in the Akan Twi language which translates as, “Even the sea still receives rains water”. With all the water in the sea, it still receives more rain water. With more money people can secure or solve most of their other survival needs. This works if your brand’s customers are individuals as well as other brands / businesses.
Preserving time - This is usually for very busy business people. They have very little time to spare, especially on trivial issues. Offering something that helps them preserve their time is highly rewarded.
Error Number 2
Your brand is confusing. People do not care enough to spend time unraveling the mystery around your brand. Go straight to the point, let it be clear and simple what the brand is about and what you offer. Confuse them and they will ignore you.
